Timber frame structures are a centuries old building technique found pretty much around the world with variations. From temples to cathedrals to barns and in our time, homes, timber framing is a time honored building method.
Maine Barn and Connolly & Co. Timber Frames has been hand crafting timber structures for over 25 years. Their projects cover New England to the mid-Atlantic.
The most often used wood specie for the frames is Eastern White Pine. This is a readily available native wood that regenerates quickly and is desirable for its dimensional stability.
Occasionally oak is used for a timber frame for its look and strength.
When there are long structural spans Douglas Fir may be used.
Designing a timber frame is always a special work to take full advantage of the openness allowed by the strength of the timbers. Whether it’s a barn or home TLC gives careful consideration to the surrounding environment and maximizing solar potential.
